Proficiency Levels

The Lumos curriculum, aligned with the CEFR, offers 7 levels of English, from basic to advanced. Each level includes 3 concurrent courses in listening/speaking, reading/writing, and grammar/vocabulary, completed in one semester.

INTRODUCTION TO ESL - CEFR PRE-A1 Equivalence

At this level, students will demonstrate understanding of simple written words and sentences using phonemic awareness, context, and visual cues. They'll identify and write simple words and phrases using basic writing conventions, listen, recall, and respond appropriately to classroom instructions and simple oral statements, and use simple grammatical principles including the simple present, imperatives, yes/no questions, wh-questions, pronouns, and simple adverbs.

LEVEL I: BEGINNER - CEFR A1 Equivalence

Students should understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases, introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions about personal details, interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

LEVEL II: HIGH BEGINNER - CEFR A2 Equivalence

Students at this level can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. They can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

LEVEL III: LOW INTERMEDIATE - CEFR B1 Equivalence

Students can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.

LEVEL IV: HIGH INTERMEDIATE - CEFR B2 Equivalence

Students must have advanced vocabulary skills and the ability to search for information using various resources. They should be able to take detailed notes, recognize structured presentations, provide feedback, understand internet-based functions for research, present information effectively, produce a structured essay, organize ideas using diagrams, paraphrase ideas, understand idiomatic expressions, analyze video media content, and express personal opinions with complex verbal expression and presentation techniques.

LEVEL V: ADVANCED - CEFR C1 Equivalence

At this level, students can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. They can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes and can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects.

LEVEL VI: HIGHER EDUCATION SKILLS - CEFR C2 Equivalence

This level signifies mastery, allowing students to understand virtually everything heard or read with ease. They can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts coherently. Students at this level can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

COMMUNICATIVE TEACHING
OF LANGUAGES (CLT)

The Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) methodology focuses on the student and the practical use of the language. Unlike the traditional method in CLT the teacher is a facilitator encouraging students to define their goals and lead the learning.

READING

Reading is crucial to learning a language especially in academic or professional contexts. We encourage practice with university magazines and books.

WRITING

Writing is key to communication in new languages. Our students practice with assignments and essays to improve writing skills.

SPEAKING

Speaking English is challenging. Our students practice with natives and receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses to refine pronunciation and structure.

LISTENING

Correct pronunciation is essential in any language. With native teachers, students learn to pronounce clearly and effectively.
